Issues with Microsoft Deployment RC1 - October 25, 2007
The development team has isolated issues in the initial Microsoft Deployment RC1 build. Toolkit was throwing errors when Configure ConfigMgr Integration, Configure Management Pack or Configure WDS PXE Filter features were invoked. The errors occur because two files were not properly signed in the Microsoft Deployment RC1 release. We have released an updated build which contains these signed files. Please download the latest installers from Connect web site.
If you would like to work around the issue without reinstalling Microsoft Deployment , you can refer to steps given at Microsoft Deployment team blog site.
Thank you for your patience and your diligence in testing Microsoft Deployment. Please make sure to submit bug reports on Connect Feedback site.

The latest installment of BDD, code named Deployment 4, now named Microsoft Deployment (MD) is available for download on the Microsoft Connect site. This is the much anticipated version that integrates with ConfigMgr’s OSD and is the next evolution of BDD. With this new version you can expect to have a single solution for the deployment of both desktops and servers as well as WDS, and ACT. See below for more details on what is included.
Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) is now Microsoft Deployment!
We are pleased to announce the RC1 release and new name for the fourth generation deployment Solution Accelerator, Microsoft Deployment. The current generation of automated deployment tools from Microsoft is increasingly unified; the same tools, utilities and products in many cases offer support and functionality for desktop and server deployment tasks. Following the trend of unified tools, the Business Desktop Deployment team has incorporated new functionality and guidance to support automated server deployment in addition to desktop deployment capabilities. This expanded feature set, with its guidance and ability to automate installation of Windows client and server operating systems - as well as applications - has effectively outgrown the current name, Business Desktop Deployment. Previous Beta releases have been using the code name “Deployment 4″ to refer to Microsoft Deployment before the name was finalized.
Microsoft Deployment is the next version of Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007. It unifies the tools and processes required for desktop and server deployment into a common deployment console and collection of guidance. Microsoft Deployment adds integration with current Microsoft deployment technologies - System Center Configuration Manager 2007, Windows Deployment Services, and the Windows Automated Installation Kit - to create a single path for image creation and automated installation. Microsoft Deployment adds integration with recently released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single path for image creation and deployment, including:
- System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Operating System Deployment
- Windows Automated Installation Kit
- Windows Deployment Services with new multicast technology
- Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0
- User State Migration Tool 3.0.1
- 2007 Office system
- Windows Server 2008 Server Manager for automated server role definition

Kevin is right, this has already been talked about, but he does a nice job of explaining the two types of multicasting. Two drawbacks to this however…First you cannot multicast across subnets, well you can but if your network supports this you are wide open to a SQL Slammer type of attack where one laptop brings your network to its knees. Second, you have to have Server 2008 to make this work.
A simple, less costly solution, that you can utilize now is to use the 1E OSD Plus Pack, or SMSNomad Branch to accomplish this - now.
One of the gazillion new and improved features of the soon to be released Windows Server 2008 is that we now have the ability to perform enhanced multicasting when deploying OS images right out of the box. The new Windows Deployment Services (WDS) will now support an enhanced multicast feature which will allow you to multicast out your Windows OS’s from Windows Server 2008. This is not ‘new’ news as I believe we have documented that this will be a feature for quite some time, but one that I feel is overlooked given all of the other many features of the new product.
There will be two types of multicast supported:
- Scheduled-Cast: This is your traditional multicast scenario where you can specify a time or certain number of clients requesting an image before a session begins for all at the same time. You can also start the session manually once all clients are in the ‘waiting’ state and ready to go.
- Auto-Cast: As soon as an allowed client requests an image, a multicast transmission begins. Other clients can then join this same session in progress and can ‘make up’ what they missed earlier by dropping back to a unicast session at the end. To me, this is a pretty cool feature as it allows one to set up an ‘always on’ multicast session to your environment that can be invoked at any time and by multiple different folks pulling down the same image. This gives you maximum flexibility and efficient use of bandwidth. Below is a screen shot from my lab that show two machines on the same multicast session - note the different session times and % complete:
I know that this has been a huge ask from my HED and K12 customers responsible for installing entire labs of machines on a regular basis. Now we have a solution ‘in-the-box’ with W08 to address this. Now all that is left to do is to integrate this multicast functionality with SCCM’s OS deployment features - don’t worry, this is already being worked on!!!

Anthony

Login has released another free SoftGrid tool, this one is for configuring the SoftGrid client install. At first mention this may not sound too exciting but they have added some dynamic programming into the client install that outputs a VBScript that you can make part of your BDD deployment solution to run and configure the SoftGrid client dynamically.
Registration is required to download.
Settings which can be configured by the SGCSK:
- All the standard installation options
- Dynamic Determination of SoftGrid Client Cache Size
- SoftGrid Client Security Settings
- Disconnect Operation Settings
Also check out the SoftGrid Team’s blog for some great info.

Anthony
